Discrimination

International day of Tolerance was celebrated at Northampton University with a Lecture on November 7th 2006.
The participants are Dr Karim Murji of Open University and Geoffrey Robertson Q.C. TALKING ON hUMAN rIGHTS.
dISCRIMINATION TAKES ALL FORMS:

1. DIRECT dISCRIMINATION OCCURS WHEN A PERSON IS TREATED LESS FAVOURABLY THAN SOMEONE ELSE FOR REASON OF THEIR gENDER,RACE,ETHNIC ORIGIN,DISABILITY,AGE, SEXUAL ORIENTATION OR RELIGION OR BELEIF.
2. Indirect discrimination occurs where a provision, criterion or practice is applied equally to everyone but the provision, criterion or practice puts or would put members of one group at a particular disadvantage.
3.VICTIMISATION occurs when someone is treated less favourably because of their involvement in a discrimination complaint.
4.HARRASSMENT REFERS TO UNWELCOME COMMENTS(WRITTEN OR SPOKEN) OR PHYSICAL CONDUCT THAT VIOLATESA PERSON'S DIGNITY AND /ORCREATESAN INTIMIDATING,HOSTILE,DEGRADING,HUMILIATINGAND /OR OFFENSIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR THEM.
Harrassment may be aggravated if it isalso based on Gender,Race,Ethnic origin, religion, disability or sexual orientation.

Age discrimination can be seen in Retail stores. B & Q decided to encourage senior citizens to help them with the sales in the store. They were able to get dedicated employees who were willing to do ordinary tasks gladly. Previously they had a large turnover when the staff were young. They still employ young men and women in various sections of the store.

If you go to a Car repair shop and service centre. One usually sees females in the office and no females where heavy tyres are stocked or carried or when the car tyres are changed.
You may see an odd female mechanic.

If you go to an accountant you see a lot of female trainees, but hardly see the boss being a female.
On the other hand in Libraries majority of workers are female, similar to teachers in a school.

In the corporate world you hardly see Females as C.E.O. s as witnessed at B.A.,British Midland, Aer Lingus, Ryanair etc.
How Many Judges do you see to be females?Similarly very few Female Surgeons are visible in the NHS.
There has not been a female President of U.S.A. or Canada, but Margaret Thatcher,Indira Gandhi, Golda Meir have yet to be replaced by another female, Though in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka other female leaders have emerged.
